Google is adding three new Motorola phones to its list of devices available on its Google Fi phone service, according to a Wednesday blog post. The Moto G Play, Moto G Power and Motorola One 5G Ace can all connect to Google's service. For a limited time, when you sign up for Fi, you can get any Motorola phone for free with Fi service credit, the post says. 

The Motorola phones are all more affordable options, particularly the Motorola One 5G Ace, which brings 5G coverage starting at $279. The Moto G Power starts at $199, and the Moto G Play starts at $99. 

In recent months, Google Fi has also added the latest Samsung and Pixel flagship phones to its Fi service, including the new Samsung Galaxy S21 series. 

Google Fi launched in 2015 as low-cost phone service that uses a combination of cellular coverage from T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular, along with local Wi-Fi networks. The Fi Unlimited plan can get you unlimited data, talk and text starting at $70 for one line, or $45 each for four to six lines. The plan also includes a membership to Google One with 100GB of cloud storage.

The best smartwatches succeed at three important jobs. They track a variety of health metrics, look great on your wrist and put your mind at ease when you're not near your phone. But not all smartwatches are created equal: Some are better phone substitutes, while others offer a more chic, watch-like look. That's the biggest difference between traditional smartwatches (like the Apple Watch) and hybrid smartwatches such as the Withings ScanWatch Horizon, which I recently reviewed. 

Conventional smartwatches do a little bit of everything. They're relatively stylish, have plenty of health and activity tracking functionality, and are packed with phonelike features such NFC for mobile payments and a speaker and microphone for taking calls. The Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, Fitbit Sense and upcoming Pixel Watch fall into this category.

But hybrid watches usually combine the qualities of analog timepieces and smartwatches, as the name implies. They tend to look more like regular watches with traditional faces that have physical hands for the hour and minutes instead of digital numbers. Hybrid watches don't have as many "smart" features, but they typically last longer on a single charge and pack plenty of health-tracking options. 

I prefer traditional smartwatches and usually wear an Apple Watch. But spending a couple of weeks with the $500 Withings ScanWatch Horizon reminded me why hybrid smartwatches can be appealing -- and also how they fall short compared with general-purpose smartwatches.

Tethered to my phone

I felt more reliant on my phone when switching from the Apple Watch to the ScanWatch Horizon. Withings' hybrid watch can show notifications (like calls, texts and app alerts), and you can also use the watch to set timers and alarms. 

But even these basic tasks are easier to accomplish on traditional watches. Since the ScanWatch Horizon only has a small circular screen that occupies a fraction of the watch's face, it's not ideal for reading full notifications. As I wrote in my review, the ScanWatch Horizon's lack of a touch screen and voice controls also made it less convenient to set times and alarms from my wrist.

If you want a smartwatch that can take some of the burden off your phone when it comes to everyday tasks, the ScanWatch probably isn't it. Think of the ScanWatch Horizon as a watch first and a smartwatch second. Even though I don't have my Apple Watch connected to my data plan, it's still a useful surrogate for my phone. I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket for tasks like replying to text messages, browsing news headlines while I'm waiting for the elevator or checking out at the cash register at my local Rite Aid.

That's not the case with the ScanWatch Horizon. I grabbed my phone almost immediately whenever I felt the buzz of a notification. The ScanWatch Horizon feels more like a fashion accessory with built-in health tracking. I loved the way it looked on my wrist, but didn't find myself using the screen for much other than to check the time or start a workout. Most of my engagement happens within the Withings HealthMate app, which provides a breakdown of bodily metrics and activity.

The ScanWatch Horizon is more limited than the Apple Watch when it comes to mimicking your phone's functionality, but it has a different advantage. With its stainless-steel casing, rotating laser-engraved bezel and analog watch face, the ScanWatch Horizon is one of the most elegant smartwatches you'll find. Not to mention, it's also cheaper than the stainless-steel version of the Apple Watch Series 7, which starts at $700. 

Amazing battery life

The Apple Watch may have more smarts, but it can't come close to the ScanWatch Horizon's battery life. Withings claims the ScanWatch Horizon can last for 30 days on a single charge, far outlasting standard smartwatches. In my experience, the ScanWatch Horizon's battery depleted to 35% after a little more than a week. I haven't spent long enough with it to see if it lives up to Withings' 30-day claim, but that's impressive nonetheless. 

The Apple Watch Series 7, on the other hand, usually lasts for one to two days on a single charge. But that's also because the Apple Watch has a lot more technology built into it. The OLED color touchscreen alone has a huge impact on the battery compared with the ScanWatch Horizon's tiny display. Some other wearables like the Garmin Venu 2 Plus that also use OLED displays can last up to nine days. It is possible to get more battery life out of today's smartwatches without sacrificing a bright color display.

Both watches go deep on health, but have different strengths

If there's one area where neither watch compromises, it's health tracking. The ScanWatch Horizon and Apple Watch Series 7 can both measure all of the hallmark health metrics found on high-end smartwatches. That includes electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) measurements -- both watches have Food and Drug Administration clearance for this feature -- along with general heart rate data, activity and exercise, sleep and blood oxygen saturation levels. Withings' blood oxygen feature also has FDA clearance, unlike Apple's. 

Even though they share many similarities when it comes to health tracking, the smartwatches have their own strengths. Withings, for example, has more sleep data to offer. You can see a breakdown of how much time you spent in light or deep sleep, sleeping heart rate and breathing disturbances, similar to the Apple Watch. Beyond that, Withings also issues a sleep score that assesses the quality of your sleep, similar to products from Fitbit, Oura and Amazon. 

The Apple Watch shows sleep duration, time spent in bed and sleeping respiratory rate. When WatchOS 9 launches this fall, it will also show sleep stages, which addresses one of the Apple Watch's major shortcomings compared to other sleep trackers. That information is useful too, but having access to a sleep score helps me understand why I might be feeling tired or energetic in the morning. It also motivates me to hit the sack earlier than usual if my sleep score hasn't been very high lately. 

The Apple Watch's design gives it an advantage over the Withings ScanWatch Horizon in a few other areas. It's smaller and lighter, which makes the Apple Watch much more comfortable to wear during workouts and to sleep (although I usually charge my Apple Watch overnight instead). Plus, the Apple Watch has built-in GPS for tracking outdoor runs, while the ScanWatch Horizon must rely on your phone's GPS. The Apple Watch is also more effective at encouraging me to stay active throughout the day since I can customize the display to show my Activity Rings. 

The bottom line

The Withings ScanWatch Horizon inherits some of the biggest advantages of analog watches: a classy design and a battery that doesn't need to be charged nightly. It's also a top-notch fitness tracker that doesn't require a subscription to unlock deeper insights like devices from Fitbit and Oura do. 

That said, it hasn't convinced me to stray from more traditional smartwatches like the Apple Watch. I value the convenience of being able to verbally ask my watch to start a workout, or respond to texts from my wrist, more than having the best-looking watch. I might have appreciated the ScanWatch Horizon's distinguished design more back in 2013 when smartwatches still looked like this. Now that smartwatches have gotten smaller and lighter and they're more common, they don't seem out of place on your wrist at weddings and dinner parties. 

The ScanWatch Horizon is ideal for those who want both a classic watch and a fitness tracker in one device. I could see why some might prefer the ScanWatch Horizon's simplicity, since it means the watch itself is less distracting. But the Apple Watch does a better job of freeing you from your phone, and that matters more to me.

For those who want to give their cameras a bird's-eye view, Sony announced a new drone called Airpeak at the CES show this week. The four-rotor remotely piloted aircraft can carry a Sony A7S III camera, a full-frame, interchangeable-lens model that can shoot 4K video.

The Airpeak is capable of "precise, stable flight, and aims to contribute to the world of entertainment while also pursuing new possibilities for creative expression," the Japanese electronics giant said. It's the smallest drone that can carry a Sony Alpha camera, Sony added.

Sony didn't disclose pricing or availability information, though it said it's establishing a new professional photography and video production business unit this spring. For now, it's looking for feedback from photo and video professionals.

In a promotional video, Sony showed off the Airpeak capturing aerial footage of Sony's Vision-S electric car. 

The move comes as the top drone maker, China-based DJI, faces new trade restrictions with the United States. That's opened a door for drone rivals like Skydio, too.

Drones are popular for industries including real estate, entertainment, agriculture and industrial inspections. Video and photo uses are relatively fleeting, but the technology holds the promise of greater change through package delivery and perhaps even passenger carriers like the Cadillac-branded aircraft General Motors showed off at CES.

Regulatory restrictions governing drone use are gradually loosening.

Disney is in the early stages of planning a membership program similar to Amazon prime, according to a report Wednesday from The Wall Street Journal. 

The membership would offer "discounts or special perks to encourage customers to spend more on its streaming services, theme parks, resorts and merchandise," WSJ cited unnamed sources as saying. Disney hopes the program will capitalize on cross-selling across its various entertainment entities, both to provide more value to its customers by personalizing their content, as well as to collect data and information on those preferences, according to the report.

The membership program would help customers of one Disney product or service receive discounts for others. Disney already offers some added benefits to Disney Plus members for other Disney properties. For example, Disney World is currently offering 25% off stays for Disney Plus subscribers.

The company is also talking about working with third parties to offer more Disney experiences, such as discounted to tickets to Disney shows on Broadway, the report said.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Aspire Vero is Acer's first laptop made from post-consumer recycled plastics, and it ships in packaging made from recycled materials that are also 100% recyclable. Launched at CES 2022, the 15.6-inch laptop's chassis and screen bezel is made from 30% PCR plastic, while the keycaps on the keyboard are 50% PCR plastic. The inside of the laptop is also designed to be easily accessible and upgradable. Despite the plastic body, the Aspire Vero has a higher-end look and feel. And now the design is getting a special edition with inspiration from National Geographic. 

For the Acer Aspire National Geographic Edition, the lid will have a topographic map-like pattern that alludes to the impact of global warming on rising sea levels, Acer said in the announcement. A small National Geographic logo is also on the lid and the iconic National Geographic yellow border is printed on the bottom right corner of the keyboard. The words "For Planet Earth" are also printed in yellow on the spacebar.

Each purchase of the special edition model helps support the US-based global nonprofit National Geographic Society in its work to protect our world through exploration, research and education, Acer said. Oddly, though, it won't immediately be available in the US. It is expected to be available in China this month followed by France in March. Acer also said it will be available in multiple countries across the Asia Pacific. Pricing in China will be 5,499 yuan and 899 euros in France, which converts to $1,015, £755 or AU$1,410. 

Most PC-makers are taking steps to increase sustainability including the use of recyclable materials in packaging and PCR plastics in products. What's unique for Acer is that Vero is an entire product line focused on greener product design. Along with the Aspire Vero and a TravelMate business laptop based on the same design, there is a compact desktop, a monitor and computer accessories.

The Tribeca Festival's annual Immersive showcase returns Friday, bringing an abundance of virtual reality and experimentations with next-gen audio and augmented reality -- even the premiere of a gigantic holographic display. 

Over the last five years, Tribeca Immersive has grown into one of the biggest US events showing off the latest interactive storytelling in tech-forward formats like virtual reality. This year's exhibition includes a long lineup of VR, plus projects based in AR and binaural 3D audio. 

There's even a holographic film showing off a new 65-inch display by Looking Glass Factory for the first time. It takes the pint-sized version CNET last looked at and stretches it out to cinematic scale.

This year's Immersive selection, which opens Friday and runs through June 19, also straddles the liminal state of the pandemic life now, with one foot stepping back into in-person norms and the other still standing in the virtual replicas of events during the COVID-19 lockdown. Tribeca Immersive holds in-person experiences accessible only in the fest's Lower Manhattan stomping ground. But the exhibition also has a virtual wing that can transport you from your home to a fanciful gallery of VR pieces, if you have a $5 ticket (but also a relatively expensive VR setup).

"We have learned and evolved over the course of the past two years, so that both the physical presence and the digital presence are equally important,"  Casey Baltes, the vice president of Tribeca Games and Immersive, said in an interview ahead of the festival's opening. 

Conceptually, 2022's Immersive program curates its two dozen pieces across four themes, according to Ana Brzezińska, Immersive curator. They comprise motifs of nature, society and identity, art and memory, and "tomorrow," she said. 

The virtual Immersive environment reflects those themes too, Brzezińska said. Tribeca commissioned VR artist Dani Bittman to build the space, creating an "Alice in Wonderland experience" that presents its 12 projects on view when you explore its periphery.

Most of Tribeca Immersive is installed at Spring Studios, the festival's central hub. But two in-person pieces take place elsewhere in the city: A VR project called Evolver taking place at a stand-alone space near the southern tip of Manhattan, a project that involves well-known auteurs like director Terrence Malick as a producer and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood providing music, and a site-specific piece called Mushroom Cloud NYC / Rise you can unlock on a pier on the Hudson River, which incorporates augmented reality and an NFT.

The Spring Studio's main space is where Looking Glass' giant holographic display is screening Zanzibar: Trouble in Paradise, a lusciously shot documentary short about women who farm seaweed on an African island as they grapple with impacts of climate change. 

The Spring Studio's installations also include some projects exclusively available there in person: 

• Kubo Walk The City, a 20-minute VR animation set in Korea under Japanese occupation; 
• Missing Picture Ep. 3-5, three new installments running 56 minutes in the series in which filmmakers narrate a VR creation of movie they never fully pulled off; 
• Plastisapiens, a 15-minute VR piece imaging a future where plastic and organic life merge; 
• Iago: The Green Eyed Monster, a six-minute VR take on the villain of Shakespeare's Othello, reimagined as a woman; 
• Intravene, a 25-minute immersive audio experience in binaural sound, about an epidemic of overdoses in Vancouver; 
• Please, Believe Me, a 28-minute piece by famed VR artist Nonny de la Peña exploring the case of a woman whose Lyme disease symptoms were ignored by the medical establishment; 
• ReachYou, an 11-minute AR project described as a transmission from a future when Earth is no longer habitable.

Other Immersive projects are available both in person and at home: 

• Emerging Radiance: Honoring the Nikkei Farmers of Bellevue, a three-minute experience combining hand-painted murals and AR filters -- this piece is exhibited as AR in person at Spring Studio and re-created for VR in the virtual Tribeca Immersive exhibit; 
• LGBTQ + VR Museum, a 20-minute VR celebration of queer stories and art; 
• Planet City VR, a 6-minute VR exploring a fictional city of 10 billion, clustering all the people on Earth together to let the rest of the planet exist without our interference; 
• The Black Movement Library - Movement Portraits, 17 minutes of VR portraits of performers contributing their movement data to an archive called the Black Movement Library; 
• This Is Not A Ceremony, a 25-minute VR winding through several testimonials about being indigenous Canadian; 
• Container, a 16-minute piece that's part VR, part installation art, touching on modern-day echoes of a slave trade tragedy in 1794. 

And finally, a few projects are exclusive to the virtual Immersive environment: 

• Limbotopia, a 25-minute surrealist animated VR film taking a dreamlike journey through a mysterious city; 
• Mescaform Hill: The Missing Five, an 18-minute animated VR graphic novel about a police cadet investigating the disappearance of several cops;
• End of Night, a 49-minute VR piece about an escape by boat from Nazi-occupied Denmark; 
• Exhibition A, a 25-minute project described as a VR love letter to women of color; 
• Glimpse, a 23-minute interactive VR animation set in the mind of a heartbroken panda artist who has recently broken up with his deer girlfriend; 
• Missing Pictures Ep. 2, an episode of the VR series. 
  

To access these from home, you need a VR headset that connects to a computer and can run programs through Steam because Tribeca Immersive's exhibit was built in the Museum of Other Realities, a Steam-powered VR environment.

The Oculus Quest, the country's most popular consumer VR headset, isn't enough on its own. If you want to use your Quest to explore Tribeca Immersive, you'll need to connect it to a pretty powerful laptop or PC with its Oculus Link feature. 

Nvidia says it's taking steps to make sure its GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card ends up in the hands of gamers. The RTX 3060 will be able to detect aspects of the Ethereum cryptocurrency mining algorithm and limit its hash rate by around 50 percent, the company said in a blog post last week. This will make the GPU less efficient at mining the digital coin. 

"We designed GeForce GPUs for gamers, and gamers are clamoring for more," wrote Matt Wuebbling, Nvidia's vice president of global GeForce marketing, in the blog post. "Yet Nvidia GPUs are programmable. And users are constantly discovering new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. Mining cryptocurrency is one of them."

GPUs -- which are important for PC gaming, video editing and other graphics-intensive activities -- have been increasingly difficult to find in stock as the price of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum hit new highs. Cryptocurrencies are mined using powerful computers, often equipped with multiple GPUs. 

But Nvidia isn't leaving cryptocurrency fans out in the cold. The company said it's launching a new CMP, or cryptocurrency mining processor, product line. CMP products will be optimized for mining, with features to improve power efficiency and airflow, but won't do graphics, Nvidia said. 

"They don't meet the specifications required of a GeForce GPU and, thus, don't impact the availability of GeForce GPUs to gamers," wrote Wuebbling.

Nvidia unveiled the entry-level RTX 3060, in January at CES 2021. The RTX 3060 is meant to entice those who are still using older-generation chips, and Nvidia said it offers 10 times the performance of 2016's GTX 1060 and twice the performance of 2018's 2060. 

The RTX 3060 launched on Thursday with a $329 starting price, but shortages will make it hard to find in stock.

A practical solar car has been the stuff of sci-fi, mostly relegated to proofs of concept, but lately that changed as three credible makers are putting them on the market. Long-range EV buyers who think these cars will let them completely cut the cord are going to be disappointed, but those who have a realistic view of their driving needs might be enthused. 

All of these early leaders still embrace plugged-in charging but layer on solar charging as a first line method to cover most ordinary driving. Whether that's true will depend on each driver's mileage needs and access to sunlight; clean car nuts who love to keep their car garaged or covered need not apply.

Lightyear 0

TheLightyear 0 comes off as the most sophisticated of the early solar cars, and for a quarter of a million dollars, it had better. Don't worry, the next two cars I show you cost about the same as the sales tax on this one.

Lightyear says the 54 square feet of solar panels across the top of their car can harvest as much as 45 miles of driving range per day on top of about 390 miles of total battery range (per the European WLTP test cycle, which tends to be optimistic compared to the US ratings). Of that range 320 miles can be garnered in about an hour when plugged into a DC fast charger. 

The Lightyear 0 weighs just under 3,500 pounds, which, by today's standards, is svelte, especially for a car carrying a heavy battery pack that typically weighs from 500 to 800 pounds. Part of that lightweighting comes from using simple, compact in-wheel motors, which is something of a given in the solar car business.

Only 950 of these cars are slated for initial production, with sale limited to the UK and parts of the EU.

Sono Sion

At the other end of the price spectrum lies the Sono Motors Sion at around $30,000, an extrapolation since this car is also not slated for the US market. The Sion offers 190 miles of total range and 70 to 150 miles per week of solar range, another example of the rather tortured dual-range estimates solar car companies provide, owing to the two disparate ways their cars get electric energy.

The Sion is plastered in solar panels, not just on the top-facing surfaces and, as a result, thumbs its nose at styling awards. When you do need to plug in a Sion, a DC fast charge will pack on around 80% of its 190 miles range in 30 minutes or so.

Like several non-solar EVs, the Sion boasts of being able to power other things, like EVs that Sono's imagery cheekily suggests got stranded without solar.

Sono recently announced it will commission Finnish contract manufacturer Valmet as its manufacturing partner, placing the Sion in the same hands that built many years of Boxsters and Caymans, as well as several current Mercedes models. No garage band there.

Aptera

If the Aptera vehicle looks familiar, it's because it's been knocking around as the next big thing for at least 15 years. Now in solar electric form, it warrants (yet) another look. You'll either love or laugh at its airplane-without-wings styling and notice that it's a three-wheeler. But Aptera says all that helps it barge through the air using as little as 30% of the energy of an EV or Hybrid.

Its unconventional, light and slippery design creates a virtuous circle: The vehicle needs a smaller, lighter battery pack that, in turn, augments the vehicle's lightness, allowing for a meaningful state of charge to be achieved via the sun. Aptera uses an interactive mapping tool to illustrate how much solar driving you might expect. On top of that, you can configure an Aptera with battery options ranging from 250 to an almost incredible 1,000 miles.

The vehicle holds two people, and it helps if they're good friends: The pontoon fender bracketed cabin is snug (at least it's not a tandem) though it has a substantial rear storage deck reminiscent of a Jaguar E-Type.

Notice I have been referring to the Aptera as a vehicle, not a car, because that's a key distinction. In the humorless eyes of your local DMV clerk, the Aptera is a motorcycle, or perhaps an "auto-cycle." You'd need to check the motor vehicle rules in your state, but you should at least not need a helmet as the thing is fully enclosed. You might, however, need a motorcycle or three-wheel vehicle endorsement. And note that, as a non-car, the Aptera does not have to conform to the same safety standards as cars, like having airbags.

Of the three cars I've shown you, this is the only one made and sold in the USA, ranging from about $26,000 for 250 miles of range to around $50,000 for one with an astounding projected 1,000 miles. In a way, the Aptera makes the most sense because it's so utterly distinct from any other EV that it argues for being owned along with one.

Normalizing or niche?

While you make up your mind about solar cars, here's what I think: Real-world performance feedback is going to be very important, as this is a new kind of charging that almost no driver has any experience with. 

That said, untethered charging does something potent: It allows an EV to potentially leapfrog the convenience of a gas-engined car rather than just trying to approximate it. That's right in line with my belief that the best charge isn't the fastest but the most persistent and transparent. 

I suspect that EV intenders are going to be pretty skeptical of solar cars, or they might break the opposite way and accept the concept, thanks to millions of residential solar installations in the US that have set the table for the technology.

Solar cars are an interesting proposition for the prepper who realizes that, as almost everything is going electric, almost nothing will work when the grid is down. It would be nice to know that, even when that happens, you still have a working car.

Finally, I have my concerns about the limited solar range these cars deliver at a time when we are about to see massive growth in conventional charging infrastructure; That would seem to create a risk that the solar proposition gets lost in a sea of conventional charging that could relegate solar vehicles to just the most serious environmentalists or technology dilettantes.

All that said, there is an undeniable elegance to a solar electric car, so I'll be watching them for you.

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 is done and dusted. It was a huge. The major update was the absolute megaton of movie and TV show announcements made by Marvel during its Saturday panel -- including two new Avengers movies in the works. But there was more -- much more, including John Wick 4, Star Trek shows and DC movies.

Marvel Phase 5 Revealed

One of the biggest pieces of news from Marvel's big Hall H panel: Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is incoming! Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sends off Phase 4, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is officially the first Phase 5 movie.

There's a whole host of newsworthy info in that single image. Maybe the most important: new Daredevil! Blade release date!

Marvel announces two new Avengers movies

Looking like Marvel is attempting to repeat the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame trick. Marvel also announced not one, but two Avengers movies.

There's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Both are part of Marvel Phase 6. Everyone just needs to relax and give us time to breathe this in. The whole thing (that is, phases 4, 5 and 6) is already being referred to as The Multiverse Saga.

Folks, this is a lot.

In addition, Fantastic Four is also part of this new Phase 6.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

We got our first look at Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Thankfully, unlike some trailers, we actually got to see this one!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

A Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer was shown, but only folks at the Marvel Hall H panel got to see. The big news appears to be the focus on Rocket. The internet is already going wild over "Baby Rocket" appearing in the trailer, which seems to suggest we're getting a bit of Rocket backstory in the new movie.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

We got a brand new trailer for a show we are low key quite excited about -- She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

The big thing everyone seems super excited about at this point is the appearance of Daredevil.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Ahead of the big Marvel Hall H panel, we got an early look at an illustrated poster for the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Does this mean we're potentially get an early look at the movie today? Potentially. But this movie doesn't come out till February next year. Still, here's hoping!

A trailer was shown at the event, but sadly only people attending the show got to see. But look, this is really funny. 

John Wick 4

Keanu Reeves' assassin returns for his fourth movie outing, and the trailer gave us a look at his badass training regime, along with baddies played by Donnie Yen and Bill Skarsgård. This one hits theaters March 24, 2023.

The Sandman

The Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's legendary fantasy comic series is coming on Aug. 5, and the streaming service drummed up excitement by dropping a new trailer on Saturday.

Star Trek: Picard

A whole bunch of favorites from Star Trek: The Next Generation will show up in the third and final season of Picard, which got a trailer on Saturday. It'll stream on Paramount Plus in 2023.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

A trailer hinted at what the crew of the USS Cerritos will be getting up to in season 3 of the animated series, which premieres on Paramount Plus on Aug. 25. We're also getting a crossover episode in season 2 of live-action show Strange New Worlds, which is expected to start in 2023.

Black Adam

Black Adam is bringing DC antihero action to theaters on Oct. 21, and a new trailer hinted at the moral choices Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character will face in the movie.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods

Shazam: Fury of the Gods, the sequel to 2019's Shazam, will bring more magical superhero action to movie theaters on Dec. 21. It got a fresh trailer during Saturday's Warner Bros. panel, revealing Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as a pair of very scary baddies.

Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power kicks off on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 2 and a new trailer gave us another taste of the prequel show. The show is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, and it sure sounds like big bad Sauron is aiming to spread darkness across the land.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer 

Chris Pine is a plan-making, lute-playing bard, Michelle Rodriguez is a barbarian, Bridgerton's and The Gray Man's Regé-Jean Page is a warrior, Justice Smith is a mage, and Sophia Lillis is a shape-shifting druid. They pull off a heist in a fantasy adventure that looks like a ton of fun, complete with classic D&D creatures like dragons, displacer beasts, a mimic, an Owlbear, and Hugh Grant.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur clip

This fun Marvel cartoon series has a bonkers voice cast, announced at SDCC: Alison Brie, Daveed Diggs, Maya Hawke (from Stranger Things), Jennifer Hudson, Cobie Smulders, Craig Robinson, Indya Moore, May Calamawy (Moon Knight), Method Man (!), Wesley Snipes (!!) and astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison (!!!). Laurence Fishburne also stars, having also had a hand in originating the whole project. Coming in 2023 to Disney Channel and Disney Plus, the animated series sees Diamond White star as Lunella Lafayette, a 13-year-old super-genius who partners with, well, a dinosaur.

Gotham Knights Batgirl trailer

Batman spinoff game Gotham Knights is heading to PS5, Xbox Series X and PC on Oct. 25. In the game, you play as Batman's sidekicks Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood or Batgirl, and at SDCC a new trailer focuses on the latter, aka Barbara Gordon. The in-game footage and cut scenes see the purple-and-yellow-garbed crimefighter showing off her fighting skills, weaponry and glider cape on Gotham's mean streets.

X-Men '97 release date

Marvel's animated reboot of the iconic '90s X-Men cartoon will stream on Disney Plus in fall 2023. 

Spider-Man: Freshman Year release date

Dunno if you've heard of this Spider-Man character, but apparently he merits his own animated series. Spider-Man: Freshman Year streams, where else, on Disney Plus in 2024.

What If...? season 2 release date

Animated Marvel series What If...? will return to Disney Plus in early 2023. The first series set up multiverse elements that proved to be important in recent MCU films, so maybe season 2 will also be a testing ground for more cool MCU stuff.

Marvel Zombies release date

Speaking of What If...?, one of the episodes took us to a branch of the MCU multiverse dominated by the undead. That's being expanded into an entire Marvel Zombies animated series on Disney Plus -- but not until 2024.

Teen Wolf: The Movie trailer

When the moon is full, Teen Wolf transforms from a movie and then to a TV show and then a movie again. Streaming service Paramount Plus showed off a new trailer for a movie reuniting the cast of the 2011 TV show, including Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed and Tyler "Superman" Hoechlin. They appeared in 6 seasons of lycanthropic adventures loosely based on the 1980s Michael J Fox film, and now they're adding shadow ninjas and more supernatural action.

National Treasure: Edge of History

There's no Nicolas Cage in this Disney Plus TV reboot of the treasure-hunting family adventure movies, but Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha will appear. The teaser introduces Lisette Olivera as a new generation of tomb raider, sorry, national treasure hunter.

Prey

The new Predator movie screened to audiences at SDCC ahead of its streaming release Aug. 5 on Hulu (in the US) and Disney Plus elsewhere.

Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head

Streamer Paramount Plus also revealed a clip from a reboot of '90s-era-defining sniggering metalheads Beavis and Butt-Head, which premieres Aug. 4. 

The Wheel of Time season 3

Amazon Prime Video has renewed fantasy series The Wheel of Time, based on the books by Robert Jordan, for a third season before the second season has even begun streaming. Amazon also announced a series of shorts to precede season 2.

Andor

Visitors to SDCC can check out costumes from the forthcoming Disney Plus Star Wars series Andor, streaming Aug. 31.

Power Rangers $132 Dragonzord Reveal

Hasbro showed a higher-end $132 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Dragonzord, which CNET unveiled ahead of the Boom Studios panel on Thursday. Part of Hasbro's Zord Ascension Project line, this Dragonzord is able to combine with the earlier Megazord from that line into a Super Megazord and a Battle Mode.

Compact sedans remain a high-volume segment, even though crossovers have stolen a bit of their thunder. Nevertheless, stalwarts like the Civic and Corolla continue to power through. This week, the segment once again welcomes an all-new contender in the 2021 Hyundai Elantra.

Bigger, hyperstylized and techier than ever, the 2021 Elantra appears to be packing the goods it needs to do battle with the industry's other recently revamped compact cars. Not only will we look at the Elantra (and its new hybrid variant) against the aforementioned cars from Honda and Toyota, we'll also throw the new Nissan Sentra and Mazda3 sedans in for some additional context.

Exterior dimensions

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is bigger in every way, but that doesn't mean it's the bulkiest boy on the block. It does, however, reign supreme in overall vehicle length (184.1 inches) and width (71.9 inches). Its 55.7-inch height is tied with the Civic for the lowest in the group, and its wheelbase is ever so slightly shorter than that of the Mazda3 sedan. If you've driven any vehicle n this group, the Hyundai should feel no different in size.

Interior dimensions

More exterior space generally means more interior space, and the Elantra comes packing plenty of it. At 40.6 inches of front headroom (without a sunroof) and 37.3 inches in the back, the Elantra's low height doesn't necessarily correlate to a lack of interior space. While the Nissan Sentra offers the most legroom in the front row, the Elantra's 38-inch rear legroom is top of the pops.

Trunk space is a vital figure in this segment, and again, the Elantra does a pretty good job, providing 14.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That means it has more capacity than the Mazda3 and Corolla, but lags behind the Sentra and Civic.

Powertrain and performance

Some of the cars on this list have multiple engines on offer, so I stuck with each model's base engine for comparison. It's worth noting, though, that the Civic and Corolla offer peppier engines on higher trim levels, which might be worth checking out if you value some commute scoot. At least for the moment, all 2021 gas-only Elantra trims rock a 2.0-liter gas engine making 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, which is average for the segment.

As for cog-swappers, the Civic still offers a stick, but other lower models are stuck with continuously variable or traditional automatic transmissions. The Corolla only offers a stick on its more powerful, sportier variants. All-wheel drive is only available on the Mazda3 sedan.

When it comes to fuel economy, the segment is pretty tightly packed, with most models returning between 35 and 38 miles per gallon on the highway (by EPA) estimates, save for the 2021 Elantra, which does not have any estimates yet. The 139-hp Elantra Hybrid is aiming for more than 50 mpg on the highway, which would put it right next to the Corolla Hybrid and its estimated 52 mpg highway rating.

Tech

This is harder to put in a chart, so I'll just run down some of the tech to expect in each car. While an 8-inch display is standard, the 2021 Elantra can be optioned with a pair of 10.25-inch screens that can pair with two devices simultaneously via Bluetooth, one for calls and one for audio streaming. This is the most screen real-estate you can get among affordable compact sedans. Navigation is optional, but wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard (we haven't seen cord-cutting mirroring in this class before, either). Standard safety systems including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, Highway Driving Assist (highway lane holding) and automatic emergency braking.

With some notable exceptions, nearly every car on this list packs standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Honda Civic's base radio is this tiny little critter that doesn't run either mirroring setup (higher trims have both), while the Corolla's limited to just Apple CarPlay at present.

The democratization of safety systems means most segment stalwarts are pretty well loaded. The Mazda3 promises full-speed adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The Sentra doesn't have ACC standard, but it swaps in blind-spot monitoring, while the Corolla includes them both. The Civic has nearly the same suite as standard, save for BSM.

Price

While we don't yet know how much the 2021 Elantra and Elantra Hybrid will cost, I assume it will be competitive within the segment. For context, the Sentra is the bargain of the bunch, with a starting price of $20,015 (including destination), just ahead of the Corolla at $20,555 and the Civic at $20,805. The Mazda3 sedan is the financial outlier, with a higher window sticker of $22,445. The Elantra goes on sale later this year, so cost information should be out soon.
