GoPro reveals what the GPS in the Hero5 Black camera is for
GoPro just unlocked the hidden potential of the Hero5 camera's GPS data.
As of today, you can download its Quik for Desktop software for playing, editing and sharing your videos, and it will transform that data into telemetry gauges you can overlay onto your clips.
It's simple to use, too: Just record your video with the GPS turned on and connected to satellites and the camera starts collecting information for GPS path, speed, altitude, g-force and elevation gain. Import your clips into Quik and you'll see a little gauge icon when you playback a video.

There's an Info Cluster that gives you date and time, distance in kilometers or miles, altitude and elevation gain; a speedometer and speed graph (the latter comes in handy for tagging high-speed highlights); GPS path; and g-force. All of them can be resized and placed anywhere on your clip.
GoPro's site has all the details, but I did a quick test of it and, like I said earlier, it's simple to use. Having the GPS on will cut into the battery life some, which should be expected but is still something to keep in mind. Also, after you turn on the GPS, you'll want to make sure you're locked onto some satellites before you start recording. That seems like a given, but I still managed to record several clips thinking it would lock quickly after I started moving and missed out on data because of it.
You can check out the clip below to get an idea of what it will do, but it's definitely a nice addition and makes paying extra for the Hero5 Black more worthwhile for sure.

Soft sleep surfaces and gaps between the mattress and crib increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Safety should be priority number one when shopping for a crib mattress, but you should also consider how easy it will be to use. The mattress is Greenguard Gold certified, which means it's tested to ensure its materials don't emit any chemicals that could affect the air your child breathes. One downside of innerspring crib mattresses is that they're heavier than their foam core counterparts. The FlexCool weighs shy of 15 pounds. That might not sound like a lot, but the extra weight could make changing sheets even more of a chore.
With the rise of brands such as Casper and Purple, the mattress in a box has carved out a niche in the mattress space. It should come as no surprise then that the mattress in a box model has made its way into the crib mattress category. The Graco Deluxe is Greenguard Gold certified and comes with a removable water-resistant cover that's machine-washable, something you'll appreciate at 3 a.m. when your little one wakes up from a soaked, leaky diaper. Though the mattress is suitable for both babies and toddlers, it has the same level of firmness on both sides.
If you have budget to spare, the waterproof crib mattress from Newton Baby is an excellent option. Newton's proprietary Wovenaire core is made of food-grade polymer mesh, which is 90% air by volume. This allows air to flow freely through the mattress, reducing the risk of suffocation. As a bonus, it also allows you to hose down the mattress if it gets super-gross. You need to set aside two to six hours to let it dry. The cover is also washable and waterproof. Hopefully, that would catch all the grossness before it hits the mattress, but it's nice to have options just in case.
The Newton is a dual-stage crib mattress with a fully breathable side for babies and a waterproof side for toddlers who are potty training. The mattress is not organic, though the company says the materials are all hypoallergenic. It's also Greenguard Gold certified, which is good if you're a parent who plans to put the breathability claim to the test as soon as you get it out of the package (I see you, curious dads). Though it's undoubtedly pricey, the Newton could give you extra peace of mind.
The Newton boasts some impressive tech, but it's not the only breathable crib mattress in town. Halo, a safe sleep pioneer, known for its sleep sacks and swiveling bassinet, has a breathable crib mattress that's worth a look. Called the DreamWeave after its breathable mesh core, the mattress is made up of food-grade polymers, but it's mostly just pockets of air. The mattress cover is also breathable and has two sides -- a 3D mesh quilted side for infants and a toddler side that's waterproof to protect against accidents. Should some leakage get through the cover, the mattress itself can be rinsed off like the Newton.
The Halo Dreamwave is Greenguard Gold certified and uses hypoallergenic materials. Though this mattress is still expensive, it's cheaper than the Newton and offers similar features.
If you want your baby to sleep on a crib mattress made of organic, natural materials, you'll like the options from Naturepedic. Their mattresses use a food-grade polyurethane "WaveSupport" core and organic cotton for filling. Meanwhile, the waterproof cover is made of non-GMO sugarcane and wipes clean easily. The mattress is GOTS certified for organic and sustainably sourced materials and Greenguard Gold certified.
This particular crib mattress has the same firmness on both sides, but Naturepedic makes a two-stage version. If your baby has sensitive skin and you like the ecological benefits of going organic, an organic crib mattress might make sense for you.
Changing crib sheets is hard enough, thanks to the necessary extra-snug fit of the mattress, so we get it if you want to make the process easier on yourself with a lighter mattress. The Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams crib mattress is a sub-$100 option that offers a surprising amount of features for the money. Its core is made of high-density thermo-bonded polyester fiber, while the waterproof cover is vinyl. It's also lightweight, weighing just 7.5 pounds.
You might not think you can get Greenguard Gold certification at the under-$100 price point, but Heavenly Dreams delivers that coveted green seal of approval. The two-stage version of Heavenly Dreams is currently unavailable, but at this price you could buy the toddler version when you're ready to upgrade and still spend less than you would on many two-stage mattresses on the market. If you don't need ultra-premium features or organic materials, the Safety 1st is a solid bet.
There are many reasons to go with a mini crib over a full-size crib. What are the different types of crib mattresses?
There are several ways you can break down the types of crib mattresses available, but generally, they fall into two categories:
Innerspring mattress: An innerspring crib mattress is a more traditional mattress that relies on internal coil springs for support. The higher the number of coils, the more supportive the mattress. As a result of having hundreds of steel coils for a core, innerspring mattresses are almost always heavier than their foam counterparts. They also tend to be pricier.
Foam mattress: Foam crib mattresses make up the vast majority of the market. They're typically made of polyurethane foam and can be relatively inexpensive due to their simpler construction than innerspring mattresses. Within the foam crib mattress category, you have breathable mattresses, which feature woven polymer cores that allow air to pass through them more easily.
Do babies like a firm mattress?
You might like the pillowy, sink-in feel of a soft mattress, but your baby needs to sleep on something a good deal firmer for their safety. According to Alex Savy, a certified sleep science coach and founder of SleepingOcean, a good crib mattress must be firm and supportive as a precaution against SIDS. The American Academy of Pediatrics says soft mattresses, including those made of memory foam, can form indentations that increase suffocation risk.
"A crib mattress should not be cushioning and hugging," says Savy. "Instead, it must spring back quicklywhen the pressure is applied."
What does Greenguard Gold certified mean?
You'll often see this certification on crib mattresses and many other baby products. Greenguard Gold certification signifies that a product has passed a battery of tests looking for chemical emissions called Volatile Organic Compounds. These pollutants are released as a gas from paints, cleaning supplies and materials. A Greenguard Gold certified product has proven itself to emit a very low amount of VOCs, if any.
Though Greenguard Gold is the most prevalent among crib mattresses, you'll see numerous other awards and certifications. CertiPur-US is similar in that it certifies a product has low VOCs, but a mattress with this certification has also been made without ozone depleters, toxic flame retardants or phthalates. However, Greenguard Gold is generally considered to be the more stringent standard.
Do all crib mattresses fit all cribs?
All standard-size crib mattresses are required by law to measure between 51 and 5/8 to 53 inches long and 27 and 1/4 to 28 inches wide. So yes, in theory, any crib mattress on sale today should fit any crib, but some will fit better than others. Some mattresses' corners are square, while others are rounded, leaving gaps. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, you should have no gaps larger than two fingers between the mattress and the crib's sides.

Apple is expanding its independent repairs program to include Macs
Have a broken Mac? Apple is making it easier to get it fixed. On Monday the company revealed that it is expanding its repairs program to now support Macs at independent shops.
The news is an expansion of the repairs program that Apple previously launched for iPhones last year, expanding the availability of repairs beyond Apple Stores or one of the company's Authorized Service Providers.
"When a device needs repairs, we want people to have access to a safe and reliable solution -- this latest expansion joins the thousands of repair locations we've added over the past year," Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, said in a statement to Reuters.
"We're looking forward to bringing that convenient and trustworthy repair experience to our Mac users."
Those looking to become independent repair shops can apply to sign up for the program, with admitted stores able to get free training as well as access to official manuals, diagnostic tools and the ability to buy proper parts to make their fixes.
For users, the expansion should provide another useful option that could be particularly helpful if your Mac is out-of-warranty.
Apple tells Reuters that since launching the US last fall, 140 businesses with a total of 700 locations had signed up for the iPhone repairs program. Last month the company announced that it had expanded the repairs program to include Canada and 32 countries in Europe.

The engineers are back in charge at Intel.
After just two years in the role, Intel's chief executive and former chief financial officer Bob Swan will step down effective Feb. 15, the company said in a press release on Wednesday. Pat Gelsinger, a chip engineer who spent 30 years at Intel but the last eight years at software company VMware, has been appointed the new CEO of Intel.
"The board is confident that Pat, together with the rest of the leadership team, will ensure strong execution of Intel's strategy to build on its product leadership and take advantage of the significant opportunities ahead as it continues to transform from a CPU to a multi-architecture XPU company," said Omar Ishrak, independent chairman of the Intel board, in the release.
Intel has been financially successful in recent quarters, but it's had years of trouble with its core processor manufacturing work, ceding leadership to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., or TSMC. With Gelsinger as CEO, Intel will once again have a technologist back in the top job. He was the architect of Intel's 80486 chip that powered millions of PCs in the 1990s, and he rose to the chief technology officer position.
Appointing Gelsinger CEO is a "big step in the right direction," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Ambrish Srivastava in a note Wednesday. Gelsinger likely can't fix Intel's problems immediately, but "he certainly has the background and experience to address and tackle many of the challenges over the long term. We hold him in very high regard from his prior tenure at Intel."
One of Gelsinger's toughest decisions will be about how much to rely on others, like TSMC or Samsung, to build its chip designs. Intel is preparing for that possibility, a move that would've been "heresy" at old-school Intel, Creative Strategies analyst Ben Bajarin said in a research note Wednesday. Moving much of its manufacturing outside will be difficult in part because it'll be hard to find a partner who can keep up with Intel's enormous chipmaking demand.
Gelsinger's return to Intel comes at a time of major changes in the chip business. Apple is now designing its own Mac processors, moving away from Intel's chips and relying on TSMC for manufacturing. Arm, designer of the chip family that powers all smartphones, is pushing into the PC business with help from Microsoft. Nvidia, which dominates graphics and AI chips, is seeking to buy Arm for $40 billion. AMD has been resurgent in the x86 chip market, profiting from Intel's difficulties. Smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm, soon to be led by new CEO Christiano Amon, just announced it plans to acquire Arm chip designer Nuvia to speed up its own chip designs. Even more radical changes are on the horizon with the rise of quantum computing.
Tech at the top
Gelsinger rose through Intel's ranks during the era when x86 chips like his 80486 dominated Intel's business and the consumer computing market. Back then, steady increases in chip clock speed and decreases in transistor circuitry size meant processors steadily advanced year after year, fueling Intel's expansion from PC chips to those that power servers.

VMwareNowadays, chip progress is harder. That's led chipmakers to shift some of their focus from general-purpose processors like x86 CPUs into more special-purpose chips for chores like graphics and artificial intelligence. Intel has embraced the trend with its "XPU" initiative.
Swan's departure was reported earlier Wednesday by CNBC.
He was named CEO in January 2019 after serving as interim CEO following the surprise resignation of former CEO Brian Krzanich in June 2018.
"My goal over the past two years has been to position Intel for a new era of distributed intelligence, improving execution to strengthen our core CPU franchise and extending our reach to accelerate growth," Swan said in the release. "With significant progress made across those priorities, we're now at the right juncture to make this transition to the next leader of Intel."
Intel manufacturing woes
Intel has had trouble shrinking chip electronics. Its move from processors with electronic elements measuring 14 nanometers -- 14 billionths of a meter -- took three years longer than expected. It's still building many chips with the 14nm process even as it increases 10nm manufacturing. Intel announced in 2020 it would have to delay its shift to the next-generation 7nm process by six months, too.
In its statement Wednesday, though, Intel announced "strong progress" on its 7nm process. It also said it'll exceed its earlier profitability forecast for the quarter. Details will come during its Jan. 21 report on fourth-quarter financial results. That'll be the last report Swan will deliver at Intel.
"Swan was dealt a difficult hand, and 10nm was already off the rails when he was appointed CEO," said Moor Insights and Strategy analyst Patrick Moorhead. "I think it came down to investor pressure and impatience. Chip problems take years to address and while Swan accomplished a lot, it wasn't enough."

2023 Honda CR-V Teased Ahead of Summer Debut
There's a brand-new Honda CR-V coming this year, and the automaker gave us our first glimpse of the redesigned crossover on Tuesday ahead of its official debut this summer.
What do we know about the new CR-V? Not much. The teaser images show an SUV that's much more stylish than before, with slim LED headlamps and -- if you click through to the gallery -- a more stylized lower fascia. Around back, the 2023 CR-V will keep the SUV's usual vertical lighting elements, in addition to slim horizontal lamps. We can also see a hybrid badge, confirming Honda will continue to offer the CR-V with a gasoline-electric powertrain.
The CR-V comes during what Honda calls its "Year of the SUV." The company is also planning to reveal the totally new HR-V this year, which will continue to slot below the CR-V in Honda's lineup.
It's unclear exactly when Honda will show the new CR-V this summer, but we expect more details to trickle out between now and then.

How to clean an air purifier
I took a look at user guides for Honeywell, Winix and Levoit air purifiers to come up with this cleaning overview. Here are the basic steps to follow to clean your air purifier:
- Unplug your air purifier
This is always the first step. Make sure your air purifier is unplugged before you begin.
2. Check the filters
Most air purifiers come with two different filters: a prefilter and a HEPA filter. Some even have a third filter. Each manufacturer's recommendations will vary in terms of cleaning the filters. Honeywell, Winix and Levoit all say not to wash or otherwise clean their HEPA filters, but instead to replace them regularly.
Levoit suggests replacing its HEPA filter every six to eight months, while both Honeywell and Winix say their units last up to one year.
Levoit's prefilter should be cleaned every two to four weeks with a gentle brush or vacuum. You can wash the Winix prefilter every few weeks; just make sure it's completely dry before you put it back. And Honeywell says not to wash it's prefilter at all, but instead to replace it every three months.
3. Wipe off the air purifier
All of the manufacturers I checked suggested wiping off the air purifier with a dry cloth about once every few months. Do not use water or any cleaning solvent to clean off your air purifier.
4. Store the filters when not in use
If the air purifier isn't going to be used for a month or more, Honeywell says it's best to remove and store its filters in tightly sealed bags.
One final note
Keep in mind that the specific cleaning requirements might vary slightly depending on the brand and model of air purifier you purchase. Make sure to check the printed or online user's guide that comes with your air purifier to confirm its maintenance needs. Regardless, your air purifier will need some sort of upkeep and it will likely follow the information detailed above (or very close).

Photoshop Express has many of the same features you'd find in Lightroom, including exposure, contrast and color editing options, but strips out some of the pro tools and cloud syncing and, crucially, ditches the subscription fee. It's a great tool for tweaking your images to bring out their best, but you'll also find a decent selection of filters and overlay textures, as well as tools for making cool collages from your images.
It's not as open to wild creativity as other options on this list, but it's a solid editing app at a price that's hard to argue with.

Prisma doesn't deal with subtle filters and basic image corrections. Instead, its trippy filters will transform your images into often bizarre artistic creations. The results have a painterly effect and indeed many filters are inspired by artists such as Salvador Dali and Picasso. The filters are strong, and while you can tweak them, not every filter will work with every image. I found some to be more suited to portraits while other filters worked best with landscapes.
But it's great fun to experiment with and when you find a photo that works, it really works.
5. Bazaart
iOS only , $8 a month or $48 a year.
Bazaart's montage and collage tools let you combine multiple different elements -- from photos, to text, to graphics -- and layer them all up to create a finished work of art. It has tools that let you instantly erase the background from behind a portrait subject (I was amazed at how well it worked!) in order to put in a new background or layer up multiple effects. It also has a huge variety of templates to create gorgeous collages for Instagram stories too.

I particularly like Photofox's dispersion effect, which makes it look like your subject is bursting into particles (trust me, it's cool), as well as the glitch effects and the double exposure that overlays two images on top of each other.
As with Bazaart, there are endless possibilities of what you can do by layering and compositing different types of images and applying different effects to each.

VSCO began life making color grading presets for Lightroom and its roots are clear in the app today. Rather than offer stickers and animated GIFs for Snapchat enthusiasts, VSCO is all about the more artful filmic color filters. The app has a huge range of presets available, including looks designed to emulate classic rolls of film from Fujifilm, Kodak and Ilford.
It's got a great selection of black-and-white filters too, making it a great choice to experiment with if you're into your moody monochrome shots.

PicsArt has a huge range of editing tools available to you, from basic adjustments like exposure and contrast, through to cinematic color grading and dramatic filters that transform your images into painting-like pieces of art. There are loads of options for both the tone and shape of your face in selfies -- I won't go into the ethics of using these tools for "beauty" purposes, but I had fun in using the tools to intentionally transform my features into bizarre proportions.
There's a whole Instagram-style social sharing element to PicsArt as well, if you're interested in that. Personally I was mostly interested in the editing options.

DIY 'Dune' sandworm costume will spice up your cosplay
I recall being entirely squicked out by the giant sandworms in the film version of "Dune." Now, if I so choose, I can recapture and own that feeling by following Instructables user canida's directions for making a sandworm costume.
The clever costume design begins with a $13 kid's-play tunnel. After that, you need 6 yards of sandworm-tan fabric, mouth-pink fabric, posterboard, wire, and a large cardboard box. You will need some basic sewing skills to pull the costume off, but the end result is a wonderfully squirmy and toothy worm outfit.
Granted, the costume is pretty far from life-size. The fictional worms can get up to 1,300 feet long and swallow mining equipment (not to mention people) whole, but you'll just have to make do.
Canida talks about how the costume makes for a great geek test. Do people recognize you as a sandworm, or do they think you're from "Tremors," or a Sarlacc from "Star Wars?" Does it remind them of the "Dune" books, the movie, or the miniseries? You might have to carry a full spice rack with you as a clue.

Robinhood $20 Million Data Breach Settlement: See if You're Owed Money
A California judge has given preliminary approval to a $20 million class-action settlement between investing app Robinhood and customers who say the platform's negligence led to their personal information being leaked.
According to a complaint filed in federal court in February 2021, Robinhood's system "lacks simple and almost universal security measures used by other broker-dealer online systems, such as verifying changes in bank account links."
According to Elizabeth Kramer, an attorney for the plaintiffs, class members in the case are defined as anyone in the US whose Robinhood accounts were accessed by unauthorized users between Jan. 1, 2020, and April 27, 2022.
Robinhood deputy general counsel Lucas Moskowitz said the company takes cybersecurity very seriously.
"[We] are pleased to have resolved this matter," Moskowitz said in a statement shared with CNET. "We continue to take numerous steps to safeguard accounts, including using hashing algorithms, encryption, two-factor authentication and other account security measures."
Approximately 40,000 customers have claimed unauthorized users accessed their Robinhood accounts, according to court filings.
The payout agreement was submitted on July 1 and received preliminary approval on Aug. 23. A final approval hearing has been slated for next spring.

What is Robinhood accused of in this class action case?
In 2021, San Francisco law firm Erickson, Kramer and Osborne filed a class action lawsuit against Robinhood on behalf of Siddharth Mehta, Kevin Qian, Michael Furtado and other Robinhood customers who claimed their Robinhood accounts were hacked.
According to the motion for settlement filed July 1 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Robinhood "used substandard security practices and lacked security measures used by other broker-dealer online systems," leading to multiple data breaches.
Who qualifies for a payment in the Robinhood settlement?
Any US resident whose Robinhood accounts were accessed by unauthorized users between Jan. 1, 2020, and April 27, 2022, or who notified Robinhood their accounts were hacked, is considered eligible to file a claim, according to Kramer.
The settlement does not, however, cover claims arising exclusively from a Nov. 3, 2021, data breach that leaked the personal details of more than 7 million customers, including names, birthdates and ZIP codes.
That incident is the subject of a separate lawsuit, according to Kramer.
"To put it more simply, this settlement is based on alleged cybersecurity failures by Robinhood that 'left the door unlocked' for hackers over time," she told CNET. "The specific November 2021 event is carved out."
How much could customers receive in compensation?
In addition to up to $260 cash, class members are eligible for two years of free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.

US-based customers whose accounts were hacked between Jan. 1, 2020, and April 27, 2022, can file a claim for up to $260 per person.
According to Barrons, individual payouts break down as follows:
• Up to $100 for out-of-pocket expenses resulting from the breach
• Up to $100 in reimbursement for identity theft protection or credit monitoring services
• Up to $60 for time spent responding to the issue.
Class members are also eligible for two years of free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.
In addition to the cash payments and protection services, the settlement requires Robinhood to improve security procedures, including:
- Supplemental two-factor authentication
- Prompting users to update passwords
- Proactive monitoring of account takeovers
- Cybersecurity awareness campaigns
- Real-time voice support for customers
How do I file a claim in the Robinhood settlement?
Notification of the settlement will officially go out on Sept. 13, the same day the settlement website will go live.
According to Kramer, the site will include a simple online form for potential class members to complete, as well as a print-out version to mail in.
When will I receive payment from Robinhood?
Preliminary approval for the settlement was given on Aug. 23, 2022. A hearing to assess final approval has been scheduled for May 16, 2023.
Class members would receive payment after that.
Robinhood's rocky road to the present
An investing and stock-trading app launched in 2013, Robinhood is popular among millennials, who make up a majority of its users. The Robinhood app has exploded in popularity since its debut, managing $98 billion in assets by the end of 2021 and reporting 14 million monthly users in June 2022.
Many of its services are available for no fee and members' accounts are, on average, significantly smaller than its competitors, according to data from Broker Chooser.

But Robinhood's rapid rise has come with controversy and a string of litigation: In February 2021, the company was sued by the family of a 20-year-old trader who killed himself after he incorrectly believed he had racked up approximately $730,000 in losses on the app.
That same year, Robinhood faced several civil suits after it froze GameStop trading following a Reddit campaign to buy up shares of the video-game retailer that caused its stock price to spike.
In June 2021, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ordered Robinhood to pay more than $70 million in fines and restitution for violating financial regulations and giving customers false and misleading information.
There have also been several high-profile cybersecurity incidents: In October 2020, Bloomberg reported that approximately 2,000 Robinhood customers' accounts were exposed by hackers.
In the November 2021 attack, the company claimed, a hacker "socially engineered a customer support employee by phone and obtained access to certain customer support systems" in order to extort money. Law enforcement was informed of the extortion attempt, the company maintained, and the leak was contained.

And on Aug. 2, the New York State Department of Financial Services hit Robinhood Crypto, the investing app's cryptocurrency trading wing, with a $30 million fine for "significant" failures to comply with the state's consumer protection, cybersecurity and money laundering statutes.
Also in August, Robinhood laid off nearly a quarter of its employees following a steep decline in trading activity on the app. It was the second round of layoffs this year after Robinhood trimmed its staff by about 9% in April
The two rounds combined have eliminated more than 1,000 jobs from the company, The Wall Street Journal reported.
"Last year, we staffed many of our operations functions under the assumption that the heightened retail engagement we had been seeing with the stock and crypto markets in the COVID era would persist into 2022," Robinhood chief executive and co-founder Vlad Tenev said in a blog post.
"In this new environment, we are operating with more staffing than appropriate," Tenev added. "As CEO, I approved and took responsibility for our ambitious staffing trajectory -- this is on me."

Only in a year as strange as 2020 would Motorola release a Razr phone with a folding screen in February and then six months later launch a new and improved version. The initial Razr packed nostalgia and a high-tech hinge that allowed the phone to fold its screen in half. But while the phone was certainly highly anticipated and unique, it had some key flaws, including midtier specs, short battery life and a $1,500 price (£1,500, AU$2,699).
The new Motorola Razr, which goes on sale this fall, brings a slew of hardware and software changes and improvements. It also has a lower price at $1,400 (converts to about £1,075 or AU$1,920), which makes it cheaper than Samsung's $1,450 Galaxy Z Flip 5G and slightly more palatable during this pandemic, in which consumers are more cost-conscious. I should note that in 2020 Motorola released or announced a number of affordable phones ranging from $200 to $500, including the Motorola One 5G.
One thing that remains unchanged, however, is the fancy box it comes in. Unlike the coffin-like boxes most phones are packaged in, the Razr comes standing upright with a transparent lid that lets you see the phone before you open it. The lid lifts to reveal the foldable phone nestled in the box's angled base.
Motorola designed the box so that its bottom can be used as a stand for the Razr. The sides of its base are dotted with tiny holes to amplify the audio from the phone's speaker grill, which is really handy when you're listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks. That said, the base is just a box -- it doesn't have power to recharge the phone or electrically amplify music to the level of a standalone Bluetooth speaker. Nonetheless, the box has its uses and it'll surely surprise people the first time they open it.
